Tourism evolution

Posted: 24 Jul 2011 08:22 PM PDT

During the 1980s, when on survival training in the wildernesses of Pakistan, Nepal and Kenya, conducted by the Adventure Foundation of Pakistan, I defined it as: “Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing behind but footprints.”

In the mid-nineties, due to an upsurge in the awareness of the negative effects of mass tourism on previously sheltered local communities, I added to the definition: “… and ‘adding’ value to the locals as compensation for breaching their privacy and  stealing a look into their cultures and lifestyle.”

Now it has been redefined as “visiting natural areas with the objectives of learning, studying or participating in activities that do not negatively affect the environment; whilst protecting and empowering the local community socially and economically.”

Holding true to my current definition, I embarked on my recent journey to the east coast of Thailand, a place thriving on ecotourism. My destination was the Faasai Eco Resort — which would be the base of my eco travels in the serene location of Kung Wiman Peninsula.

Welcoming me upon my arrival was the owner of the resort, who volunteered to take me on a tour of the resort. We walked through a veritable jungle, the backyard of the resort; a result of the owner’s careful planning.

The place appealed to me so much that after a quick nap I was back in the forest exploring the abundant variety of fruit trees and its spice garden, and I also managed to stumble upon a mineral water lagoon. Surrounded by the wilderness I could hear the gushing stream which flows with plenty of fish; a fact that also makes it a haven for a large variety of birds. I couldn’t help but feel a sense of peace — I felt at one with Mother Nature, as clichéd as that may sound.

While surveying the area we also visited a neighbouring orchard, where trees were laden with longan (dragon eye fruit), jack fruit, pineapple and durian. Chanthburi is the renowned capital of durian, the king of fruits in South East Asia which is also well known for its foul smell, quite like that of gym socks after you have sweated it out, unfortunately.

The resort was filled with eco-friendly surprises on the inside, too. Instead of taking a dip in a regular chlorinated pool, you shall find yourself wading in a mineral-rich pool of water fed by an underground spring.

The resort also boasts of a leisure forest trail which takes you over a hill to a secluded beach. On the sublime beach with a rocky shoreline, away from the hustle and bustle I had left far behind, I felt truly blessed.

Overcome by a feeling of fulfillment, a thought crossed my mind: “Would this place ever be the same if more and more people started visiting it and interfering with its unspoiled beauty?”

Awakening me the next morning was the sound of nature — the chirping of birds and the pitter-patter of a drizzle. I hit the road once again sustained by a wholesome meal of cereal and coconut juice. We drove a few kilometres from the Resort to Hua Laem Fishing Village, located at the foothills of the Cardamom Mountains, to observe the local fishing community. This was an opportunity to experience a simple lifestyle where people sustain themselves from the natural offerings of the sea.

Confirming my worst fears, I was informed that owing to the increasing number of visitors the fishermen had started supplementing their insufficient income by offering tourists accommodation at their homes. Some of the locals had also attempted to improve their sanitary facilities to cater to the tourists — a deathblow to the rural lifestyle. Disturbed by this trend that altered the natural order of things, I turned and distracted myself with the beautiful view of the nearby White Water Lake.

For my third and final day at the resort, on a quest to extract the ultimate from my eco-travel experience, I travelled deeper into the forest. I start my expedition by driving for an hour and a half to the Khao Chamao National Park. The museum at the entrance has an interesting display of forest ecology and wildlife within the park area — a great way of getting acquainted with the wildlife within the park.

The Park is divided by its two primary features; the main topography which includes the Khao Chamao forests and the Yad Khao Pan Tee, standing at a daunting height of 1024 metres. The fertile, moist, evergreen forest features many natural attractions; a large variety of trees, natives of the area, waterfalls and caves. The area along the Prasae River is a sanctuary for wildlife, home to all sorts of mammals, amphibians and reptiles. If you’re lucky, you can catch glimpses of elephants, crown gibbons, sea cows, barking deer and a wide variety of bird species.

This is the true feel of eco-tourism, the passion for which brought me to this place. It is an opportunity to be in sync with nature; to admire its beauty without tainting it; to appreciate its offerings without spoiling it and to cater to the survival of its inhabitants without contaminating it.

Today, however, this new buzzword has attracted many people; some wanting to contribute to ‘green’ travel and some wanting to make a quick buck off it. To ensure that you are in for a good eco-travel experience always be sure to distinguish ‘green’ tourist traps from the genuinely eco-friendly ones. Thankfully, there are still some people out there who are genuinely concerned for the future of healthy tourism, tourism that depends on sustainability and preservation.

Ascott Signs Citadines Serviced Residence in Bangalore, India

Posted: 20 Jul 2011 09:13 PM PDT

INDIA-Ascott has secured a 96-unit serviced residence in Bangalore through a lease agreement.Ascott will rebrand the property as the Citadines Richmond Bangalore and operate it from 1 August 2011. The property will be Ascott's first to open in India.

Citadines Richmond Bangalore is located along the well-known Richmond Road in the Central Business District. The property is also close to prominent high street retail destinations such as Mahatma Gandhi (MG) Road and Brigade Road. Many Grade-A office developments and other commercial establishments are also in the vicinity.

Citadines Richmond Bangalore will offer a mix of studio, one and two-bedroom apartments. Each apartment will come with a fully-equipped kitchen, en-suite bathrooms, separate work and living areas as well as modern amenities.

Residents will be able to relax at the swimming pool and the pool-side café or work out in the gymnasium.

Besides Citadines Richmond Bangalore, Ascott has six other properties with more than 1,300 apartment units under development in India. The six properties are located in Ahmadabad, Bangalore (two properties), Chennai (two properties) and Hyderabad. Of the six properties, Somerset Greenways Chennai, is scheduled to open later this year while the remaining five properties are scheduled to open progressively in the next three years. In Bangalore, with the addition of Citadines Richmond Bangalore, Ascott will have three properties with over 500 apartment units.

Mr Ronald Tay, Ascott's Chief Investment Officer who oversees the company's business in India, said, “Given the strength of the IT sector in India, it is timely for us to deepen our presence in Bangalore, which has been touted as the Silicon Valley of India. Due to the lack of international quality serviced residences in Bangalore, Citadines Richmond Bangalore is well-positioned to cater to the rising demand. Citadines Richmond Bangalore, Ascott‟s first property in India, will offer independent travelers the comfort of home in a world- class serviced residence and the flexibility to choose the services they require to create their own stay experience.”

Vietnam's airlines expanding international air routes

Posted: 20 Jul 2011 08:50 PM PDT

According to Vo Huy Cuong, Head of the Air Transport Division of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV), to date, more than 40 international airlines have provided flights to Vietnam, while Vietnam only has one carrier – Vietnam Airlines – which is capable to provide international flights.

However, the situation will change soon when domestic air carriers are planning to fly internationally.

Opening direct air routes to UK, US

Vietnam Airlines has said that after a preparation period, the air carrier has completed necessary procedures to open the direct air route to the UK, scheduled for the last months of the year.

If this comes true, this will be its fourth direct air route to Europe. The other three include the ones from Hanoi/HCM City to Moscow (Russia), to Paris (France) and Frankfurt (Germany).

The destination for Vietnam Airlines in the UK is Gatwick airport, located 46 kilometers south of London, which is listed among the 10 biggest airports in the world. As such, Vietnam Airlines will be the first and the only air carrier which develops the direct route between Vietnam and the UK. It is expected that Vietnam Airlines will provide four flights a week with Boeing 777, while the number of flights would increase to seven per week from 2014.

According to TransViet, the official booking agent of many international airlines in Vietnam, about 10 international airlines are developing the air route between Vietnam and the UK. There have been not many sale promotion campaigns applied to the air route, but the air tickets are really competitive.

The airlines which have become familiar on the route from Vietnam to the UK are British Airways, Polish LOT, Thai Airways, and Singapore Airline. However, all the airlines arrange one point of transit in their itineraries. Meanwhile, Emirates Airlines set two points of transit in Bangkok and Dubai.

The US is really considered an important market for Vietnam Airlines. In the latest news, the Federal Aviation Administration FAA will test the flight safety monitoring capability in accordance with IASA International Air & Shipping Association. If CAAV can meet the requirements of the test, the official assessment will be carried out later, which allows the authority to grant licenses to Vietnam Airlines to open direct flights to the US.

In the first period of providing direct flights to the US, Vietnam Airlines foresees that it would incur the loss of 20 million dollars a year, the highest loss level in comparison with other international air routes.

CAAV has said that Vietnam is determined to open the direct air route to the US, not only aiming to a commercial purpose, but also aiming to polish the brand, because the US is considered the hardest market in the world.

In order to mark one’s name in the world’s aviation map, a nation has to successfully invite the US’ airlines to open air routes to the countries, while the countries have to have the airlines capable to provide flights to the US.

The aviation agreement between Vietnam and the US was inked 10 years ago, but to date, only the US has had airlines opening air routes to Vietnam. In 2007, Vietnam Airlines asked the US authorities to grant license to provide flights from HCM City to Los Angeles in California. However, the air carrier later had to withdraw, because CAAV was not ready for the flight safety monitoring capability test.

Other airlines plan to fly soon

In the past, Pacific Airlines (now Jetstar Pacific) once provided flights to Cambodia, Thailand, Singapore and Taiwan. However, the air carrier has stopped providing flights to the destinations when it was restructured.

However, the budget airline now attempts to resume the flights to Taiwan.

Among private airlines, VietJet Air is the only air carrier which has the right to provide international flights when it has the legal capital of 500 billion dong. However, the airline has not become operational yet.

In a recent statement, General Director of Indochina Airlines, Ha Dung said that the airline plans to raise the legal capital to 500 billion dong in order to obtain the right to fly internationally.
